Road bikes are designed to move efficiently on smooth paved surfaces at relatively high speed. They typically have drop handlebars, narrow high pressure tyres, and a geometry that places the rider in a forward leaning position to reduce aerodynamic drag. This design makes them fast and efficient on tarmac but poorly suited to rough surfaces, loose terrain, or relaxed upright riding.
Mountain bikes are built for off road use, with wide low pressure tyres that grip loose and uneven ground, flat handlebars that offer more control in technical situations, and typically some form of suspension at the front fork, and sometimes at the rear as well. This makes them capable on trails, gravel, and rough paths, but the added weight and rolling resistance of the tyre profile makes them slower and more demanding to ride on smooth tarmac.
Hybrid bikes draw from both categories. They use flat handlebars from mountain bike design alongside narrower, higher pressure tyres that reduce rolling resistance on pavement. The riding position is more upright than a road bike, which suits commuting, leisure riding, and mixed terrain use. They are not as fast as a road bike on tarmac and not as capable as a mountain bike on technical trails, but they cover a wide range of everyday cycling more comfortably than either.
